How to use it to dispute a low offer

  1. 1

    Get the insurer’s valuation report

Ask for it in writing. Most insurers use CCC, Mitchell or J.D. Power. How to read a CCC or Mitchell report

  2. 2

Compare their comparable cars with ours

Look for cars with a lower trim, more miles, or from far away. Those pull the value down. How to challenge the insurer’s comps

  3. 3

Send a written counter-offer with the report attached

Name the value you’re asking for and point to the listings that support it. Counter-offer letter template

  4. 4

If they won’t move, use the appraisal clause

Most auto policies let either side ask for an independent appraisal when you can’t agree on the value. Appraisal clause guide

Questions

How is this different from my insurer’s valuation?

Your insurer’s number usually comes from a valuation company it pays, such as CCC, Mitchell or J.D. Power, with adjustments that are hard to check. Our report is independent: it shows the cars for sale near you that the value is based on, with a link to each listing, so you and your adjuster can check every one.

Does the insurer have to accept it?

No. It’s evidence for your counter-offer. Adjusters respond to specific comparable cars they can check, and that is what the report gives you. If they still won’t move, most policies have an appraisal clause.

What if there aren’t enough cars like mine for sale?

This happens more with older or less common cars. We don’t send a thin report: if we can’t find enough comparable cars, we research it by hand or refund you.

What does it cost?

Basic Report: $19. Premium Report: $25. You choose after entering your car, and nothing is charged until you check out.

The report is independent market research to support your conversation with your insurer. It is not a licensed appraisal or legal advice.
